Are Chips Low FODMAP? Plain, Seasoned and Tortilla Chips
Read the potato or corn base, seasoning and dip separately. Includes a worked seasoned-chip label and questions for branded products.
Some plain chips can fit a low-FODMAP food choice, but a chip's base does not settle its seasoning or dip. Read the exact flavor's ingredients instead of applying one answer to a whole brand.
Three parts of a chip check
| Part | Example | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Potato, corn or a flour blend | The product type you need to look up |
| Seasoning | Onion powder, milk powder or an unspecified blend | Additional ingredients the base does not reveal |
| Dip | Salsa, cheese dip or a creamy dressing | A separate ingredient list and serving |
Monash includes regular corn tortilla chips in a low-FODMAP recipe, but that is not evidence about every flavored chip. For plain products, start with a short ingredient list and check portion information for the matching product type. For coated products, expand any bracketed seasoning list before drawing a conclusion.
Worked example: seasoned potato chips
Imagine potatoes, sunflower oil, seasoning (salt, onion powder, milk powder, natural flavors). Onion powder is an explicit ingredient, milk powder raises a lactose question, and the flavor wording leaves an unknown. Those are three different findings. The label does not reveal their amounts, so neither a highlighted word nor its position establishes a personal tolerance threshold.
What about Cheetos or SunChips?
A brand name is not a complete ingredient list. Choose the exact flavor and country, then use the package in your hand rather than an old retailer image. We have not tested these branded products and do not assign a blanket rating to them. A useful note includes the flavor, label date, portion and dip so you can compare like with like later.

FAQ
Are gluten-free chips automatically low FODMAP?
No. The seasoning can still contain ingredients worth reviewing, and gluten-free does not measure FODMAP content.
Does a plain chip result cover the dip?
No. Check the dip separately, including any stock, garlic, onion, dairy or sweeteners, and record how much you use.
