Is Onion Low FODMAP? Bulbs, Stock and Green Tops

Review onion in sauces, stocks and seasonings, and distinguish the bulb from different plant parts used for flavour.

By FODMAP Scan Editorial Team4 min readPublished Last content review

Onion bulbs are a common source of fructans. The concern extends beyond visible pieces: powders and onion cooked into a water-based stock can matter too. The part of an allium plant used in a recipe also matters.

Visible onion is only one form

Prepared sauces, broths, seasoning mixes and restaurant bases may contain onion or onion powder. If onion was simmered in a stock, removing the pieces does not remove fructans that entered the liquid. Ask how the base was made rather than judging a bowl only by what you can see.

Keep the plant parts separate

IngredientUseful check
Onion bulb or powderReview it as a likely fructan concern.
Spring onion green topsCheck the exact tested entry and the part used.
ChivesReview as a separate herb, not as an onion bulb.
Onion-flavoured oilCheck for onion pieces and any water-based additions.

For example, a packet soup may say 'vegetable stock' without showing the recipe on the front. Read the full list for onion, onion powder and extracts. If the kitchen or manufacturer cannot clarify a mixed seasoning, keep the result uncertain rather than assuming it is onion-free.
