Is Apple Low FODMAP? Fresh Fruit, Juice and Concentrate
Distinguish a fresh apple from apple juice and concentrate hidden in packaged foods.
Apples and apple juice are common high-FODMAP foods in Monash's guidance. Apple concentrate can also appear in bars, sauces and drinks, so a product with an apple ingredient needs a full label and portion check.
The form changes the check
| Form | What to record |
|---|---|
| Fresh apple | Fruit variety if known and the amount eaten. |
| Apple juice | Drink volume and any other fruit juices. |
| Apple concentrate in a product | Its place in the ingredients and the product serving. |
Monash includes apples and apple juice in its examples of higher-FODMAP fruit. Its label-reading advice also calls out apple juice and fruit concentrates in processed foods. Avoid assuming that a small amount of a concentrate and a whole apple are equivalent, or that a label reveals the exact FODMAP amount.
A snack-bar example
A bar marketed as 'berry' may use apple juice concentrate as a sweetener and chicory-root fiber for texture. Check the entire list rather than only the flavour on the wrapper. Use current tested entries when comparing fresh fruit servings.

FAQ
Does a berry-flavoured bar avoid apple ingredients?
Not necessarily. Apple juice or concentrate may be used even when another fruit appears in the product name.
Can I infer the FODMAP dose from ingredient order?
No. Ingredient order does not give a lab-tested FODMAP amount for your serving.
