Is Banana Low FODMAP? Ripeness and Portion Checks

See why a firm banana and a ripe banana should not be treated as the same food check.

By FODMAP Scan Editorial Team4 min readPublished Last content review

Banana ripeness changes the FODMAP question. Monash found different fructan ratings for firm and ripe common bananas when it retested them; serving size and the rest of the meal still matter.

Record ripeness, not just the fruit name

Monash's retesting reported firm common bananas as lower in fructans than ripe common bananas at the compared serving. Banana variety and current tested portions may change the detail, so use the current food entry rather than an old chart or a universal banana count.

Smoothies and snacks need a second look

ExampleExtra question
Plain bananaHow ripe is it, and how much are you eating?
Banana smoothieWhat milk, yogurt, sweetener or added fiber is included?
Banana barDoes the label also include honey, inulin or dried fruit?

For a smoothie, note the whole recipe and number of portions. A partial banana distributed across several servings is different from a large banana in one glass. A product named 'banana' may contain little banana and more relevant sweeteners or fibers.
