Are Oats Low FODMAP? Porridge, Overnight Oats and Bars
Compare oat forms and portions, then check what goes into porridge, overnight oats and packaged bars.
Oats can fit a low-FODMAP meal at an appropriate serving, but rolled, quick and other oat forms do not necessarily share one tested amount. Prepared oat foods also bring milk, fruit, honey or added fibers into the check.
Match the oat form and serving
Monash lists oats among grains with low-FODMAP serves and advises checking its app for the specific form. Do not convert an uncooked amount into a universal porridge bowl size; cooking adds water, and recipes divide oats into different numbers of servings.
Prepared oats have more ingredients
| Food | What to check |
|---|---|
| Plain porridge | Oat form, dry amount and milk. |
| Overnight oats | Yogurt, milk, fruit, honey and number of portions. |
| Oat bar | Chicory fiber, dried fruit, sweeteners and serving size. |
For example, a jar with oats, oat milk, ripe banana and honey needs more than one food entry. Note each ingredient and the portion you eat. If you have coeliac disease, follow separate gluten cross-contact guidance; a FODMAP result cannot establish gluten safety.
